You feel that? there it is again that familiar feeling of joy & optimism as a new season is about to begin. Only this time as an Arsenal fan nobody know’s what to expect.
When Wenger left before the outpouring of adulation he rightly deserved. You heard it…. the collective; “wait what? Finally is this for real”…. nobody though, would of banked on Unai Emerèy becoming the the man at the helm of Arsenal’s new dawn. He is perhaps the pragmatic & safe bet. As opposed to throwing caution to the wind with the likes of Arteta & Veira the two names that popped up quite frequently when “being brave entered the equation.
Me personally I wanted Allegri, I thought it’d happen but then slowly that fizzled out; then I warmed to the idea of Arteta….. & out of nowhere Unai Emèry was announced as manager. I was just glad the speculation was done with to be honest.
You can clearly see the attempt in direction the club is going for with Emèry being the “head coach” & having Raul Sanllehi & Sven Mislintat in charge of transfers, it’s a nice change a fresh one.
In terms of transfers the only one’s i’m really happy with are that of goal keeper Bernd Leno & Lucas Torreria, Cech is obviously not up to standards and instead of David Ospina, he should be sold.
However i’m not entirely convinced by Stephen Lichenstiner & Sokratis in terms of experience they make sense but I can’t help but feel we could of brought better.
With regards to the system/pre season.. this is where it could get interesting… will he play 4 at the back or 3, will he go with 3 in midfield or 5. Is he going with 1 upfront or two. So much yet to be answered. None of us have a clue.
I’d like to see how & if a partnership between Aubameyang & Lacazette can be struck up. Does Emèry get the best out of Ozil & Ramsey…. does Ramsey even stay?
Saying all of that, I still think we need a left back & winger at the time of writing murmurs of Dembele on loan are not going away (i’d bite your hand off for that) & Calum Chambers loaned out to Fulham makes no sense unless its to free up wages. Lucas Perez for 3-5 million is poor considering what we brought him for.
It’s going to be a topsy turvy season, genuinely have no idea where we could end up. Emèry’s Sevilla were an efficient outfit; but I feel a lot of that was down to Monchi building the side. PSG the talent he had was a joke, I’m hoping for 5th/4th & a Europa League win. But that’s pushing it.
I’m holding out for a 2-1 win against City on the premise of Pep resting his stars, but should he start a full strength team; we’re getting smacked up.
Joy because football’s back, frustration because Arsenal will no doubt stress me out. I’m just buzzing to go through it all again.
One topic I do want to touch on is Stan’s majority takeover of the club, anxious, frustrated & not happy. We’ll see now exactly what the issue was all these years and IF Gazidiz leaves for AC Milan; I wouldn’t blame him. People like Stan do NOT care about the club. This could turn out to be a very tumultuous move and derails all this optimism as pointless but we can only hope and watch how it plays out.
Final thoughts, there’s a lot that could go right but equally as much that could go wrong.
Here we go, see you on the other side.
